For breast implants there are two basic types, saline and silicone gel filled. Both are made out of a
silicone outer layer, or an inert polymer shell, which can either be smooth or slightly textured. Smooth
surfaces can allow the implant to roll around in the breast mimicking a natural breast, whereas a
textured implant will mesh with the soft tissue keeping it more firmly in place. There is no “one size fits
all” when it comes to breast augmentation. There is a wide array of sizes, volumes, and breast widths.
Each implant will be carefully selected and matched to each breast to achieve the specific look you are
trying to achieve.
Silicone gel implants are completely filled with inert polymer which the molecules stick together more
creating a cohesive environment. This creates a more natural look and feel of the breast, mimicking the
soft tissue inside. If a silicone gel implant ruptures it may go undetected because the silicone can
become trapped in the surrounding tissue maintaining the shape. A rupture silicone implant can cause
some problems including pain, swelling, slight changes in shape or size, lumps and hardening.
Saline filled implants consist of a saline solution, similar to salt water that is held inside the silicone shell.
The shell is inserted first into place and then filled with saline to your desired volume. These implants
also have the advantage of being equipped with a remote injection port, which can made the implant
adjustable and fine tune the desired outcome over a short time before the port is removed. With the
water consistency of the saline sometimes under thin skin, the implant could take on a wrinkling or
ripple effect. If a saline implant leaks, the solution is safe and will be absorbed into the body, but will
result in a collapsed or deflated breast.
Because a women’s breast may continue to develop into her early 20’s, the FDA has set age restrictions
for breast augmentation. Women must be 18 years old to have saline filled implants while silicone gel
implants require a women to be 22 years old. Breast augmentations are not meant to last forever and
may be replaced if there are complications or if the size and shape of your breasts change over time.
Many individuals will consider breast augmentation for varies reasons such as enhancing the size or
volume of naturally small breasts, recovering loss shape or size after weight loss, pregnancy or surgery,
or to create a more balance figure. Consulting with a surgeon to help consider options and answering
questions should be the first step towards creating a new you.
