A breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty or breast enlargement, is usually considered cosmetic surgery, but sometimes it can be defined as reconstructive surgery after certain treatments, such as mastectomy or serious injury. Many individuals will consider breast augmentation for different reasons, such as increasing the size or fullness of naturally small breasts, restoring the volume or shape of the breasts after weight loss, pregnancy or surgery and improving symmetry between breasts that are naturally asymmetrical. Not only does breast augmentation help to improve the fullness and look of your breasts, but it can also help with refining balance with breast to hip contours, and help to increase self-confidence and self-esteem. When considering breast augmentation, a breast lift may also be considered for those with extremely droopy breasts. This may be done separately, without adding implants to give sagging breasts the lift and fullness they may have once had. Patients do not have to choose between one or the other, many will get both an enlargement and lift together, which can be done during the same surgery. Dr. Arabitg will go over your options and what will be best for you.
There are 2 main types of implants that can be chosen for breast augmentation, saline or silicone gel filled. Saline based implants are elastomer silicone shells that are filled with a sterile saline solution, much like salt water. These implants can be filled with various quantities of saline solution that affect the look, feel, shape and firmness of your breast.
When trying to determine if a breast augmentation is right for you, Dr. Arabitg will go over what to expect before, during and after surgery. Our team will help you choose what type of implant or lift would be the perfect fit for your body. To help choose the right size, a fitting may be done by putting various size implants into a bra to determine how they feel and look. Also, discussed before surgery is what type of incision should be used. Dr. Arabitg offers one incision in particular that most doctors do not perform, which is the axillary, an incision in the armpit.
After the incision is made the implants will be placed either submammary or submuscular. Submammary, or subglandular placement, is when the implant is injected behind the breast tissue and over the pectoral muscle. Submuscular placement goes under the pectoral muscle. This specific placement may cause a longer, more painful recovery time; however, it is Dr. Arabitg's preferred placement of the implant. When closing the incisions, layered stitches will be used in the breast tissue. The incision lines will be visible at first, but will fade over time.
During the recovery of your breast augmentation, one should note that it may take several weeks to see the actual result of enlargement as swelling could take a few weeks to reduce. Patients should not engage in strenuous activity for the next 6 weeks after their surgery. Dr Arabitg and the post op team will go over how to care for your new breasts, how to properly use the prescribed medicine, when to schedule a follow up and when you should call us in case of emergency.
